Reach Out
My friend and mentor Brett wrote a wonderful blog post earlier this year called "Reach out to people who publish". The punch line is right in the first paragraph:
"A person that cares enough about a topic to write a blog post, article, or book on a topic wants to talk with other people about that idea."
I wrote something similar 5 years ago, showcasing a few examples of when I reached out to various people whose work impacted me. I framed it like this:
"It’s generous to do the potentially risky emotional labor of painting a picture. To publish a blog post, write a poem, create a company, code an app, ask a tough question, send a heartfelt postcard."
There have been a few magic moments resulting from my outreach to others. But even more have come inbound to me. They range from small "hi" comments to full-blown interviews and job offers. It's immensely rewarding when others resonate with what I've written.
Check out the flurry of comments that resulted from Brett's outreach. He obviously just cares about education. It's so good. I love to see passion on display like this.
What do you care about enough to opine on?
